In the depths of Angel Island, Sonic and Tails discover the frozen landscapes of IceCap Zone.

With winter arriving, I wanted to draw something with snow. I drafted a drawing of IceCap Zone from Sonic 3 & Knuckles in preparation for winter, but the reason it released so late into the month was because I fell ill. I'm still not fully recovered, but I pushed through and finished the drawing anyway.

Thanksgiving Dinner

To celebrate Thanksgiving, I drew all of my currently-used original characters gathering for a Thanksgiving meal. The staples of my family's Thanksgiving meal include turkey, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and green beans with bacon.

Thanksgiving Floats

"It's a Thanksgiving parade! Can you recognize the floats that are being paraded this year?"

In recognition of Thanksgiving coming up and in honor of the annual Macy's parade, I decided to draw my characters having their own parade to celebrate the occasion. There is a bit of symbolism: Ian (and Brain) struggling to hold on to the Wausau balloon by himself symbolizes my attempts to keep Wausau and Jackson going despite my struggles. The cast of Wausau and Jackson guiding the Maia balloon symbolizes how my experience making the comic led to the creation of those original characters (the series name is "Highs and Lows"). Then, my experience with "Highs and Lows" and drawing human characters led to that priority and creativity with The Artist and His Brain.

Roll Caskett in Amy Rose's Outfit

I saw a retweet of an artist who had drawn Amy Rose and Rouge the Bat (from the Sonic the Hedgehog series) in the outfits of Roll Caskett and Tron Bonne from Mega Man Legends. The Mega Man Network's Twitter account, which retweeted it, asked if the reverse existed (Roll and Tron in Amy and Rouge's outfits). Someone already drew Tron Bonne in Rouge's outfit but nobody (at the time) found one of Roll dressed as Amy. I decided to draw it for The Mega Man Network, sharing the sketch the night of the post and finishing it a day later.

Pondering

Bowling Night

It's a fun night out with friends! Bowling is one of my favorite activities, even though I'm not very good at it, so I wanted to draw my characters having a fun night out bowling. Well, at least Maia, Lenny, and Clover seem to be having fun. I'm not sure why Ralph is just chilling on his phone.

I originally drafted this sketch in early June and intended to finish it later that month. However, life happened and I didn't end up finishing it until October.

Splash Hill

Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I is a game that most regard as mediocre or bad, but despite the criticism, I think the game has a bit of merit. I felt inspired after playing the game's first zone, Splash Hill Zone, a few times while working on Genesis covers of the music. Sonic looking cool and doing tricks might feel out of place in this Zone, but I wanted to draw it anyway.

This is part of my Sonic Level Series of artworks, where I draw either my favorite levels or iconic levels from Sonic games. For as bare-bones as Sonic 4: Episode I is, people remember Splash Hill Zone.

No Lums Thumbnail

For September, I made a video attempting to play 8 different Rayman games without collecting a Lum, Ting, Teensie, etc. This is the thumbnail I made for the video, however I was unable to finish it before the video released. Thus, the release date of this drawing is one day later than the actual video, which released on September 30.

I felt a very strong collection of emotions and needed to vent them somewhere, and my first thought was to draw Burning Blaze unleashing her flames all over the place. This is the result.

Chumpkin Travels to Mars

This was a spur of the moment drawing to overcome art block. I realized that I hadn't done much recently with one of my original characters, Chumpkin, so I decided to send him to Mars to see how he'd react. A clever twist on the space-themed drawings I've been doing throughout the year, and I get to use Chumpkin in new stuff again.

I was going through a rough emotional patch one night, and when I picked up my iPad and Apple Pencil, this drawing was the result of it. I think it helped cure my bad mood by giving me an outlet to express how I was feeling.

Sweet Dream

To celebrate Sonic the Hedgehog's 31st anniversary, I drew the iconic ending scene from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on the SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive. Tails uses Sonic's plane, the Tornado, to catch Sonic after he destroyed the Death Egg.

Granted, the Death Egg isn't fully destroyed and falls onto Angel Island, but let's give Sonic this victory. He fully destroys the Death Egg in Sonic 3 & Knuckles anyway.

I felt inspired after replaying Sonic 3 & Knuckles to draw this mid-climax scene in the game. Sonic and Tails are racing to stop the Death Egg from launching, and Knuckles, who still thinks Sonic is trying to steal the Master Emerald, is racing to stop them.

The Shooting Star

I played a game from the SEGA Genesis called Ristar when I was a kid. I still have yet to beat it, but the look and feel of the game was so charming that I felt like drawing a piece based on it. Ristar is seen shooting through space on his way to the ice world Planet Freon, shown in the background. This scene is based on the Boss Clear screens from the game, where Ristar is shown traveling from planet to planet.

Water Cooler Kirby

The upcoming game Kirby and the Forgotten Land recently had a new trailer that showcased "Mouthful Mode," where Kirby would wrap his mouth around an object and control it. Some of the showcased objects Kirby can interact with include a car, a vending machine, and a traffic cone. The Internet decided to take advantage of it and created new forms for Kirby to control. I decided that the memes weren't quite "out of the box" enough, so I drew Kirby with his mouth full of a water cooler. Why not, right?

The Jedi's Hope

"Despite everything the Empire has done...there will always be hope!"

While suffering the side effects of a Covid vaccine, I rewatched Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. A few days afterwards, I became inspired to do a spontaneous Star Wars-themed drawing. This is an original (currently unnamed) character on an unnamed planet surrounded by Stormtroopers. This particular scene would take place between the end of the Clone Wars and Episode IV: A New Hope.

Neptune's Surface

I have been regaining my interest in astronomy after the New Horizons probe sent back photos of Pluto. I also wanted to expand my artistic abilities to making landscapes, not just characters. This seemed like the perfect experiment. I imagined what the surface of the planet Neptune could look like, and this is the result.

Self-Portrait 2022

To start the new year (and once again test my new iPad), I drew a new icon for myself. The background is a grid similar to the one Procreate uses when an image is transparent. I did this as both a subtle homage to the software and a contrast to the light colored grids of The Artist and His Brain's artwork.

Perhaps this is the return of my habit of drawing a new profile picture every year.

The Artist and His Brain Announcement

After finishing Wausau and Jackson, I announced a new comic strip called "The Artist and His Brain." It's a comedic tale of an artist who has to live with the worst roommate ever, that being his own brain. This was the picture I used to announce the comic, which uses materials that make the banners and icon for the comic on sites like Tapas and Webtoon.

Baby Park

Baby Park is one of my favorite Mario Kart tracks, so I decided to draw this picture honoring its chaotic nature. This is a mixture of Mario Kart: Double Dash!! and Mario Kart 8 elements since the track appeared in both of those games.

Forces United

Sonic Forces, released in 2017, was a bit of a disappointment for me, and I wish there was more and better content than was given. However, the concept behind it was, in my opinion, sound. I decided to draw the trio of playable characters: Sonic, Classic Sonic, and the player's custom avatar. Deviating away from the possibilities in the game's character creator, I inserted my Sonic-styled avatar as the custom character.

Tea With Friends

I originally planned this as an entry to Procreate's "artmash" challenges, which give artists a prompt to draw from. I chose the prompt "cup of tea," drawing my characters (from the left, Maia and Lenny) enjoying a cup of tea next to a window showing the winter snow outside. Since I got too busy to finish the drawing in time for the artmash, I decided to take my time and release it anyway.

Dethemberween Wishes

"He's the Dethemberween Thnikkaman, out to make your dreams come true!"

This drawing was a spontaneous drawing based on the Homestar Runner cartoon "Happy Dethemberween." In it, Strong Bad tells the tale of the "Dethemberween Thnikkaman," who turns Decemberween (their version of Christmas) into "Dethemberween," borrows people's hedge clippers and leaves blank media in their slippers.

In reality, it was just Bubs with a piece of paper taped to his chest with "TH" written on it.

To update the branding for my comic strip, Wausau and Jackson, I drew a new background and these portraits of Wausau Fernsby and Jackson Reid. The elements are separate, but for this picture I put them together. This is currently the basis for the profile pictures and cover art on sites where the comic strip can be read.

Water Palace

Back in 2020 I began a drawing of Sonic and Blaze from the Nintendo DS game Sonic Rush. However, I began to distance myself from the Sonic community during this time, so I lost my incentive to finish it. I found it in October of 2021 and felt the urge to finish it. The background is Water Palace, my favorite level from Rush.

This is the second draft from 2020 that I've gone back and finished, the first being "Beanbean Adventures."

This is part of my Sonic Level Series of artworks, and is the first handheld zone I have drawn.

Banana Mania

Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania, a remake of Super Monkey Ball 1, 2 and Deluxe, had just released on October 5, and I realized that I never drew anything to celebrate. I also never drew the Monkey Ball cast before, so I did some sketches to finalize my style for them before beginning. The level in the background is from Super Monkey Ball 2, and featured are the original 4 monkeys: AiAi, MeeMee, Baby, and GonGon.

Yukari Finds Out

Last year I drew an ensemble picture of the main cast from Azumanga Daioh, my favorite manga/anime. However, I only drew the students. The series also follows two teachers, Yukari Tanizaki and Minamo "Nyamo" Kurosawa. I wondered what would happen if Yukari found out that I drew the students and not her, and this drawing was the result of that.

Nature Girl

I wanted to try drawing something with an original character again, and to be perfectly honest, Maia is my favorite of my original characters outside of Wausau and Jackson. I decided to draw her looking out at a mountainous view, showing her love for nature and my own desire to actually get outside (Ho Chi Minh City was still in hard lockdown during this time).

Fish Sonic

In early September SEGA released an Early Access version of Sonic Colors Ultimate, an enhanced port of the Wii game Sonic Colors, to PS4/5, Xbox One/Series, PC and Nintendo Switch. Unfortunately, all versions of the game suffered terrible bugs, with the Switch version getting a massive memory leak that corrupted the graphics. One of the dozens of glitches would turn Sonic into a weird fish. I decided to redraw that fish, which I completed in one sitting and published the same night.

Beanbean Adventures

The very first RPG I ever played was Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga on the GameBoy Advance. I wanted to draw a tribute to an iconic part of the game where the Mario Bros. enter the Beanbean Outskirts for the first time.

This particular drawing was started in November of 2020, and put off until I resumed work on it in August 2021, nearly a year later, when I started replaying the game.

Mega Man vs. Wind Man

Inspiration hit me while listening to some video game soundtracks, so I decided to take a stab at drawing a scene from Mega Man 6. Wind Man is the boss I typically choose first when I play the game, so he (and the stage itself) is very memorable to me.

While playing an online drawing game with some friends, one of the prompts a friend was given was "Bomberman." Unfortunately, the picture they drew looked NOTHING like Bomberman, so I vowed to draw a proper illustration of Bomberman. And this is it.

YouTuber redhotsonic commissioned this artwork from me for his video regarding glitches in the Game Gear version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. He requested Sonic hold a Game Gear (that he would glitch himself) in front of the background for Sonic 2's bad ending. I sent him the image as-is, and he added glitch filters to it before publishing.

PenPen TriIceLon

"I can draw whatever I want, right?" That's what I asked myself before beginning this drawing. I felt that beacuse I am an artist with power over my own account, if I want to draw the characters from some obscure Dreamcast racing game, then I can. So this is the entire cast of the game PenPen TriIceLon, released only on Dreamcast.

I previously drew Jaw, the PenShark, as part of a parody in my review of the game. The parody in question was of TROGDOR from Homestar Runner.

Commission RHS Mario BDIWORH Thumbnail

YouTuber redhotsonic is known for his "But Does It Work On Real Hardware" (or "BDIWORH") videos, where he tests mainly Sonic ROM hacks to see if they actually work on a real Genesis/Sega CD/32X. He needed a thumbnail drawn for his then-upcoming Mario-themed episode. I volunteered, and he and I got to discussing afterwards. He commissioned art featuring Mario guarding an NES from the pursuing Luigi, Pepsiman and Flappy Bird, the subjects of his Mario hack video. Sonic is moping in the background because, as RHS put it himself, "this episode's not about him."

YouTuber redhotsonic wanted a thumbnail for an upcoming Sonic Heroes video. I was already working with him on a thumbnail for his next BDIWORH video, so I accepted the extra opportunity. It was a simpler thumbnail, which worked out because he needed this one much quicker. Sonic Heroes was a game that I grew up playing on both GameCube and PC, so I was more than happy to draw something related to it.

Low Budget Flights

"Talk about low budget flights! No food or movies?! I'm outta here!"

I felt bad for missing Sonic Adventure 2's anniversary (June 19) due to school and burnout, so I redrew an iconic scene from the opening cutscene of the game's Hero story after releasing "Unstoppable." In this scene, Sonic had been wrongfully arrested for the theft of a Chaos Emerald, so he decides to escape and search for his look-a-like, later revealed to be Shadow the Hedgehog. I grew up playing Sonic Adventure 2 Battle on the GameCube at a friend's house before buying the PC port in 2013, so this game is a big part of my childhood (although I played Sonic Adventure 1 way more).

Maia and Lenny

"Let’s face it: my animation back in 2015, despite having other characters, was really about these two. XD"

I've wanted to draw more pictures with these characters, especially since I haven't been able to create the sequel to the cartoon they originated from for various reasons. I realized that the original cartoon (and the script for the sequel) is really about these two characters, so I drew this to give them the spotlight.

Unstoppable

June 23, 2021 marked the 30th anniversary of the Sonic the Hedgehog game series, so I drew this to commemorate that. The styles featured are Classic Sonic (from the Genesis games and Mania), Modern Sonic (styled after the Adventure games) and Sonic Boom (the 2014 spinoff). The levels pictured behind the different Sonics are Green Hill (from the first Sonic game), Emerald Coast (the opening stage of Sonic Adventure) and Aquarium Park (my favorite level from Sonic Colors). Sonic has been around for 30 years and is still going strong, which is why he is unstoppable.

Chumpkin

Creation date: June 21, 2021

I was working on a remake of one of my older video game projects, "Super Chumpkin Adventures," and decided to make a new icon. This is the artwork used for the icon, which is placed upon a background used from the game for the macOS icon. As of publishing, the remade game is not yet available to the public.

Chumpkin is a strange little creature hailing from Front Door Land, and in the aforementioned game, he is on the hunt for his lost pizza. The game is a 2D platformer with physics elements and was originally made for the "Indies vs. PewDiePie" Game Jam in late 2013, utilizing the Unity engine. The remake uses the Godot engine instead.

Sleepy Toad

"Don’t forget to take a break once in a while!"

When refreshing my commission sheet for 2021, I needed a new example for flat shaded artwork since the previous artwork was aging, so I drew a sleeping Toad from Super Mario Bros. I also included a message for viewers to take care of themselves and rest in between working hours, since overworking can lead to various problems, as I have experienced myself.

Rayman and Raymesis

I remembered a piece of artwork depicting Sonic and Shadow playfully bantering with each other's Chao (based on Sonic Adventure 2), so I wanted to recreate that artwork based on my "Rayman in SA2" mod from nearly two years prior. Just like the mod, Rayman replaces Sonic and Raymesis replaces Shadow, and I decided to have a Lum, Electoon and Darktoon replace the normal, Hero and Dark Chao, respectively. Originally, they were all going to be Electoons, but I quickly realized there were better replacements I could use. As with the previous Rayman in SA2 artwork, this is done in the style of SEGA artist Yuji Uekawa.

Summer Break

Since summer vacation was coming up soon for school students, I wanted to draw this picture to give some cheery perspective to a world still ravaged by Covid-19. There shouldn't be doom and gloom all the time, right?

I drew this to commemorate the end of Super Mario Bros.' 35^th anniversary celebrations (in particular the end of Super Mario 3D All-Stars' run). The big joke on Twitter was that Mario "died" that day, so I drew a role-reversal of Super Mario 64's boss battles against Bowser.

Azumanga Daioh

Azumanga Daioh is my favorite anime, so I wanted for a long while to draw fanart of the show. I drew the main cast (minus the teachers and including Kaorin) over a flowery background reminiscent of the credits of the show itself. This was one of my favorite pieces to draw.

Rayman in SA2

I created a modification of Sonic Adventure 2 Battle that replaces Sonic and Shadow with Rayman and Raymesis, using the models from Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc. These are the drawings I made to accompany the mod: Yuji Uekawa-styled depictions of Rayman and Raymesis in the poses of Sonic and Shadow from the original game.

Commission Shiny Umbreon

This was a commission from a Twitter user, communicated shortly after I reopened my commissions with an updated sheet. The client asked for a shiny Umbreon (from the Pokémon series) clothed in Monster Hunter attire with weapons and utilities from the same game.

Sailor Moon Redraw

Several Twitter users began a viral "redraw" trend where artists had to take a screenshot from the Sailor Moon anime and redraw the scene in their art style. I decided to interpret it as a screenshot in the style of Wausau and Jackson, which is my comic strip.

OK K.O.! Thank You

I was following the Cartoon Network show OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes since its debut, and its finale aired earlier that year. I intended to have this drawing ready closer to the actual finale's release, but I became distracted with other things, so I did not finish it until December. The creator saw the picture and expressed his thanks, and that was a welcome reaction!

ArtisIan (Uekawa Style)

I planned to reboot my YouTube channel with a new name and avatar, and since I had drawn my previous avatar (SpeedySpikes) in Yuji Uekawa's style, I wanted to do the same thing with my new avatar, ArtisIan. This is the drawing that is still used as the channel's icon.

Diamond Dust Zone

I had been developing this piece for most of 2019, as I wanted to start drawing the levels I enjoyed from various Sonic games, but I hit major art block in the middle of the year. Outside of Wausau and Jackson, it was difficult for me to draw any big pieces like this one. I got some helpful feedback from some close friends of mine that encouraged me to finish the piece, and I released it. It is still one of my proudest works, even though I can see the flaws.

This is the first of my Sonic Level Series artworks, where I draw my favorite zones.

Commission OC Commission

I reopened my art commissions because I wanted to raise money for a replacement laptop after mine sustained water damage. A friend of mine commissioned this drawing of their original character in the pose of Freiza from Dragonball Z. I know next to nothing about DBZ, but I was grateful that the commissioner gave all the details I needed to make this piece.

Sonic's 28th Birthday

Sonic the Hedgehog is a series I hold dear to my heart, so I usually honor his birthday with a drawing or design. This time, I drew both Classic and Modern Sonic together, with Sonic clothed in a robe and crown that is traditional, I believe? The official artwork depicted him in this outfit, so I followed suit.

Jackson (Uekawa Style)

I was experimenting with Yuji Uekawa's shading style, so I drew Jackson (from Wausau and Jackson) in that style. I think it turned out pretty good, but I feel the character design doesn't completely fit the art style.

Sonic Adventure Defender

I love Sonic Adventure. Very much. However, I have gotten tired of the mostly-baseless criticism it gets, so I decided to draw myself properly defending the original Dreamcast game. I have little to say on the DX ports to GameCube and PC. Perhaps next time I can draw myself in a court room acting as Sonic Adventure's lawyer? There will be a time for that.

A coworker at Sonic Legacy poked me for a commission of her original character named Talitha. She is from an original comic that is still being worked on. I agreed, and we exchanged some laughs when talking about how complex her design was. I took it like a champ.

The fancomic Sonic Legacy's staff banded together to make several T-shirt designs based on Legacy-exclusive characters, including Tempest the Dolphin (who is pictured here). I wanted to show Tempest reading Sonic Legacy itself, but I worried that it would be too complicated both for me to draw and to print on the shirts.

As one of my experiments with Yuji Uekawa's shading style, I recolored a previous drawing I made of my then-YouTube icon, SpeedySpikes, in that style. I would use it as the profile picture and thumbnail icon until I rebranded as ArtisIan the following year.

Mighty the Armadillo

This was an example of pastel shading (which I have since discontinued) on my original commission sheet. Mighty the Armadillo is a character from the Sonic the Hedgehog series who had recently been brought back for the game Sonic Mania Plus.

This was an example of cel shading on my original commission sheet. Pikachu is arguably the most famous Pokémon because of his active role in the TV show.

This was an example of cel shading on my original commission sheet. May is the female trainer from the third generation of Pokémon games as well as Ash's companion in the TV adaptation of those games.

Cream and Cheese

This was an example of two characters that would not cost additional on my commission sheet. Cream and Cheese hail from the Sonic the Hedgehog series, making their introduction in the GameBoy Advance game Sonic Advance 2. I recolored and reused this drawing in future updates to my commission sheet.

Spirit Sonic

"'Come back to Smash,' they said. 'It'll be fun,' they said."

Sonic Legacy decided to make short comic strips called "Debug Mode," which I decided to jump on and contribute to. This is the only one I completed, and the inks were handed off to a colorist on the team. It is a reference to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's story mode, where the fighters were all turned into spirits.

Sonic Paradox Christmas

While I was working for Sonic Paradox, I volunteered to create the Christmas artwork for their Instagram account. I was asked to include teasers for their then-to-be-released SEGA Shorts project, so behind Sonic, Tails and Knuckles, I included references to ChuChu Rocket!, Golden Axe, Vectorman, Super Monkey Ball and Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg, which are other SEGA properties.

How the Wausau Stole Christmas

A little early Christmas gag I decided to draw for Wausau and Jackson. Since Wausau is green, just like the Grinch, I had the two dress up as the Grinch and his dog Max. This also acted as a small (not subtle) advertisement for my comic strip, which was in its first year.

I was inspired by the video game Cuphead and wanted to see how one of my characters would look in the 1930's rubber-hose style, akin to classic Mickey Mouse cartoons. Thus, I took Jackson (from Wausau and Jackson) and gave him a rubber-hose makeover.

An Eggy Monday

The Sonic Paradox team's Instagram manager was looking for new artwork, so I pitched a drawing about how Eggman hates mondays. This is the result. Eggman is dressed in the pajamas found in his concept artwork (when he was potentially going to be the hero of the series).

I wanted to draw something for Valentine's Day, so I drew Jackson and his best friend Katie. This predates the 2018+ comic strip series and is set in the universe of my cancelled graphic novel Wausau and Jackson Adventures.
